4525 36 Street, Long Island City 11101, open Monday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Call (212) 564-7100.
What does ASE certification mean?
ASE is the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, an independent, non-profit body. It is not something a shop awards itself and not something a manufacturer grants for buying equipment. A technician earns it by passing written examinations in a specific area and by documenting hands-on work experience, and it has to be renewed rather than held for life.
That last part is the important bit. A lapsed certification is not a certification, which is why the credential means something.
Why does ASE certification matter for my repair?
Modern vehicles are unforgiving of guesswork. A unibody shell has crush zones designed to deform in a specific way, panels come in several different materials, and a car with sensors in its bumpers needs those to work afterwards. Having ASE certified technicians on the job is what separates a repair that restores the vehicle from one that only looks right.
- Collision repair and structural work
- Mechanical repair, brakes, suspension and transmissions
- New York State inspection

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is an ASE certified technician?
A technician certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, an independent non-profit. It requires passing written examinations and documenting hands-on experience, and it must be renewed.
Is ASE the same as manufacturer certification?
No. Manufacturer programs certify a shop for a particular brand, usually involving equipment and training purchases. ASE certifies the individual technician, independently of any manufacturer.
Why should I care whether a shop has ASE certified technicians?
Because it is the one credential that is independent, individual and time-limited. It tells you the person working on your car has been tested, recently.
Do ASE certified technicians work on both collision and mechanical repair here?
Yes. Body work and mechanical work are both done in this building, which is why a car after an accident does not need two shops.
