Where can I get a New York State inspection in Long Island City?
A1 Collision NY & Auto Care is a New York State inspection station in Long Island City. Every vehicle registered in New York has to pass a State inspection once a year, and we handle both parts of it in one visit: the safety inspection and the emissions inspection.
We are at 4525 36 Street, Long Island City 11101, open Monday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Call (212) 564-7100 to check the current wait.
What does the New York State inspection check?
The New York State safety inspection checks the parts of the car that decide whether it is safe to drive. An inspector looks at:
- Brakes, including the parking brake
- Steering, front end, and suspension
- Tires and wheel condition
- Lights, including headlights, brake lights, and turn signals
- Windshield and wipers, and the other glass
- Mirrors, horn, and seat belts
- Fuel and exhaust systems
Most vehicles also need an emissions inspection. For cars from model year 1996 onward this is an OBD-II check, where the inspector connects to the car’s own diagnostic system and reads whether the emissions monitors are ready and clear. If your check engine light is on, the car will not pass the emissions portion, so it is worth having that looked at before you come in.
When is my New York State inspection due?
Your inspection sticker sits on the inside of the windshield and shows a month and a year. The inspection is due by the end of that month. You can be inspected earlier than that without losing time, because a new sticker runs twelve months from the month of inspection.
A vehicle registered in New York also needs a valid inspection when it is sold, and a newly registered vehicle needs one within ten days of registration if the existing sticker is not current.
What do I need to bring for a New York State inspection?
- Your current vehicle registration
- The vehicle itself, with the check engine light off
- Payment: inspection fees are set by New York State and vary by vehicle class, so call ahead if you want the exact figure for your car
What happens if my car does not pass inspection?
A failed inspection is not the end of it. You get a report showing exactly what failed, and you have the option of having the work done here. We are a full collision and auto repair shop, so brakes, suspension, exhaust, lights, and tires can all be sorted in the same place rather than sending you somewhere else and back again.
We have been repairing cars in New York City since 1991, and we are also a tire dealer, which matters here because worn tires are one of the more common reasons a car fails the safety portion.
