City driving counts as severe service in most manufacturers’ own schedules: short trips, heavy idling, and stop-start traffic all shorten oil life compared with the same mileage on a highway.

• Drain and refill with the grade your manufacturer specifies
• New oil filter
• Fluid level check: coolant, brake, washer, power steering where fitted

Follow the interval in your handbook, and treat the shorter severe-service figure as the realistic one for New York City. If your car has an oil life monitor, go by that. If the oil is black and thin on the dipstick well before the interval, something else is worth investigating, and we can look at that as part of general repair.
